Symptoms and Complications of Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral disease that infects humans through the bite of Aedes Mosquito. It is not transmissible directly by humans.The Aedes mosquitoes usually breed on stagnant water and around human habitations, and they prefer to feed on humans during the daytime in shady areas and during the evening.

Clinical Features of Chikungunya

Symptoms usually begin 3 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. It is curable, but the symptoms such as joint pains and swelling around the joints can be severe and long lasting.

Symptoms of Chikungunya include

The symptoms of this virus are like other diseases such as Dengue fever and Zika. The most common symptoms are:

  • High Fever
  • Joint Pain
  • Swelling around the joints
  • Muscle Pain
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash
  • Mouth Ulcers


Usually, Chikungunya disease lasts for about 2 to 12 days, but the joint pain and swelling around the joints can last from 6 months to a year.

Complications of Chikungunya include

Symptoms generally resolve within 7 to 10 days. In rare cases, complications can be seen. People such as older adults or anyone with underlying medical conditions are at risk. Complications are similar to Dengue. Rare complications include:

  • Low blood platelets count leading to bleeding from skin, mouth, nose and conjunctival hemorrhage or any other part of the body.
  • Jaundice
  • Kidney failure
  • Hepatitis
