In Ayurveda and Yoga, food is believed to be a life force that sustains our bodies and keeps us in good health. Therefore, it is very important for us to make the right food choice for healthy living. Sattvic foods are light in nature, easy to digest, slightly cooling, refreshing and not disturbing to the mind. As per Ayurveda, this is the best diet for strength, calm mind, perfect health and longevity.

What is a Sattvic diet?

Sattvic means pure, light, and simple foods, that are nourishing and easily digestible, not fat or protein heavy and without excess spice. Sattvic foods are wholesome, energy giving and rich in vital nutrients. They are fresh and natural, and do not contain any preservatives, artificial flavors, or additives. A Sattvic diet requires avoiding canned and processed food, and foods grown with chemical fertilizers or sprays. A Sattvic diet is vegetarian and does not include foods obtained from harming or killing animals.

Properly and freshly cooked food is Sattvic. Foods prepared with lots of love and gratitude will add to their Sattvic quality. Sattvic food needs to be chewed properly and eaten in small servings.   • Legumes, such as mung, lentils, and soy

  • Spices such as ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, coriander, mint, basil, fennel, and fenugreek
  • Not heavily roasted or salted nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, and sesame.

Sattvic food is easy to digest and can strengthen the stomach, intestine, liver and the pancreas. It is probably the best diet for those who suffer from high BP and diabetes. Moreover, Sattvic food can improve the health of your skin and quality of your hair.

The true test of our foods comes when we meditate. All meditators understand that there are two main issues. One is falling asleep–the Tamasic effect, and the other is an over-active mind–the Rajasic effect. If you want to be able to quiet the mind and maintain your alertness to explore the subconscious, you need to follow the Sattvic diet.
