Based on a report in World Health Organization (WHO), a WHO report shows a severe shortage of new antibiotics under development to fight the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of WHO said, Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide health emergency that will seriously risk progress in modern medicine.

Who has identified 12 classes of priority pathogens, few are causing common illnesses such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections, that are increasingly unaffected to existing antibiotics and urgently in need of new treatments.

There is a severe lack of treatment options for multidrug and extensively drug-resistant M. tuberculosis and gram-negative pathogens, that can cause serious and often fatal infections that pose a threat in hospitals and nursing homes.
