How to keep Skin Healthy during the Winter?

The shift from a warm climate to cooler temperatures is fun for many people. You get to dig out those sweaters and jackets, walk through fall greenery, and wake up to cool air flowing through the still open windows. But winter season is not fun for your skin. Cold weather and low moisture levels result in dry air, which then robs moisture away from the skin every second of every day. Without instant care, dry skin can cause cracking and bleeding, and harsh winter wind makes the problem worse. Your regular skincare routine is not enough. But it does not mean you go throughout winter with bad skin. Here are a few tips to keep your skin moist and healthy during the winter months:

Moisturizing

As the outside humidity drops so does the water content of your skin. This means it needs better protection such as moisturizer. Moisturizing is not just important for very dry and flaky skin, but regular skin type must indulge in this routine too. Light moisturizers may work well for you during the spring and summer. But when the climate changes, you should also change your skincare routine. Preferably, an oil-based moisturizer will help you best in winter, rather than its water-based counterparts, as the oil will create a protective layer on your skin. However, choose your oils carefully because not all oils are suitable for the face. Choose oils such as avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Moreover, your skin not only needs more moisture but moisture soon after a shower.

Dry hands

The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s difficult to keep your hands moist, mainly in cold, dry climate. This can cause itchiness and crack. To prevent hands from drying out, apply moisturizer after hand washing and numerous times throughout the day. Moreover, apply creams to keep them well moisturized before going to bed and wear gloves when you go outside.

Chapped lips

The chapped lips are one of the most significant problems in this winter. Avoid licking your lips, instead, use a lip balm with at least SPF 15, this will help to cure cracked lips. Apply every time you go out, and after eating or drinking.

Cracked heels

Cracked heels are a significant pain in winters. Soak your feet in lukewarm water for 15 minutes and then scrub with a pumice stone. Moreover, moisturize feet, particularly the heels, daily with thick cream lotions containing lactic acid and wear cotton socks to bed. Do this frequently to cure cracked heel.

Sunscreen

Sun is enjoyable during winters, but it causes tons of damage to your skin. It may be hiding in winters, but it still succeeds to peep through the clouds letting the UVA and UVB rays to harm your skin. Try applying a sunscreen to your face and your hands around 30 minutes before going outside. Moreover, reapply regularly if you stay outside a long time.

Avoid hot water

When the weather gets cold, it’s appealing to turn up the hot-water heater to make those baths extra warm. But, hot water actually dehydrates your skin and hair. Hot water reaps off the essential moisture from the skin making it even drier. Therefore, during winter, choose lukewarm water to avoid shedding as many oils away from the skin. Using burning water will increase the skin dryness making it chapped. Moreover, the same will happen if you use too cold water right from the tap in winter for showering or washing your face.

Stay hydrated

We tend to drink less water in the winter as we turn to scorching drinks such as cocoa and tea, but don’t forget that your skin requires hydration from the inside, out. Drink plenty of water as it’s important to keep your body and skin hydrated in the dry weather. This will also make sure that your skin remains glowing. Therefore, keep drinking water regularly to keep your body and skin hydrated.
