How to Control your Anger?

Do you get angry when somebody cuts you off in traffic? Does your blood pressure shoot up when your child refuses to cooperate? It takes just a few seconds to make us get angry. And this is not a particular event; it is pretty much every day of our lives in the fast-paced, city life. We are continuously angry or annoyed about anything and everything such as the traffic, the climate, the management, the state of affairs, work life, weight issues, not completing targets, a fight with a friend, or the autorickshaw drivers trying to cheat us. Anger is a normal and healthy feeling, but it’s significant to deal with it positively. Uncontrolled anger can take charge of both your health and your relationships. It’s important to control your feelings and cool yourself down for your own sake as well as for the sake of people around you. Here are some techniques to keep your anger under control:

Work it out

Exercise is one of the best ways to release all the negativity from your mind. When your mind is clouded, trying even some simple exercises such as running, walking, or swimming can help you feel lighter. It will help release tension and free your mind. While you exercise, concentrate on thinking about the exercise and your body, not what has been on your mind recently.

Count till 10

Most experts often recommend counting till 10 before expressing anger. Counting till 10 gives you time to calm down, so you can think more clearly and overcome the impulse to lash out.

Practice relaxation skills

When your anger flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practicing simple relaxation tools, such as deep breathing and relaxing imagery, can help cool down angry feelings. Moreover, repeat a calming word or phrase, such as take it easy or relax. You can also listen to music, write in a journal or do some yoga postures, whatever that will boost relaxation. Practice these methods daily. If you practice one or more of these strategies regularly, it will be easier to apply them when angry feelings strike.

Take a break

In times of crisis, or in the moment of an angry outburst, it is best to take a timeout and momentarily walk away from the situation. You can take a break from discontinuing what you’re doing, getting away from whatever is annoying you, or just taking a pause. Getting away from whatever is disturbing you will make it extremely easier to calm down. Moreover, giving a break will also help you to recognize your own mistakes and deal with the situation in a better manner.

Recognize (and avoid) your anger signs

Instead of focusing on what made you angry, work on solving the issue at hand. If you know you always get angry driving downtown at the rush time, take the bus or try to adjust your schedule to make the trip at a less busy time. If you always argue with your partner at night, avoid bringing up argumentative topics when you both are tired. Moreover, if you’re always angry that your child hasn’t cleaned his room, shut the door, so you don’t have to look at the untidiness. Remind yourself that anger won’t solve anything and might only make it worse.

Once you are calm, express your anger

After you’ve calmed down and recognized that you’re prepared to get over the incident, try to see the lighter side. Casting the incident in a humorous light can actually change the chemical response in your body from anger to fun. Moreover, express your frustration positively. State your concerns and requirements clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them.

You can’t completely remove angry feelings. But you can make changes to the way those incidents affect you, and how you respond. By trying to keep your anger in check, you and the people close to you will be happier for a long time.
