Latest radiotherapy news today: Radiotherapy with immunotherapy increases lung cancer survival

Latest radiotherapy news today

Latest radiotherapy news today: According to a phase I trial analysis, radiation treatment combined with immunotherapy is superior to radiotherapy alone in treating metastatic non-small cell lung cancer.

Similarly, In a Phase I trial, patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC) with high tumor aneuploidy (tumor cells with either extra or missing chromosomes) had significantly higher survival rates when radiation (RT) was combined with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB).

Therefore, the study’s findings, which were reported in Nature Cancer, revealed the first biomarker that can predict how well RT and ICB will work together as a treatment, and they suggested that patients who do not respond to immunotherapy alone may benefit from including radiation in their treatment regimens.

Radiation with immunotherapy for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer:

In the Phase 1 trial of 37 patients, it was seen that radiation therapy alone was less efficacious in destroying tumor cells compared to concurrent radiation and immunotherapy.

Additionally, in the concurrent therapy, immune cells were enhanced and tumor cells were better eradicated improving radiation therapy and improving survival outcomes for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer.

Therefore, the patients with low tumor mutation burden (TMB) and high aneuploidy scores had the lowest survival following immunotherapy, and those patients are likely to require further treatment, such as radiation, to improve their therapeutic efficacy and prognosis.
