Healthcare technology news: According to the findings published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology the retina’s network of the veins and arteries can help in detecting cardiovascular diseases through AI- based imaging techniques. Moreover, this provides a new era of non-invasive diagnosis which can help in early detection of heart disease without visiting the clinic.
In accordance to the research topic, an algorithm named QUANTitative Analysis of Retinal vessels Topology and siZe, or QUARTZ for short, is developed to assess the risk of stroke, heart attack and death from circulatory disease among the patients by using the parameters such as width, vessel area, and degree of curviness of the arterioles and venules in the retina. The performance of the tool is compared with the Framingham risk scores framework in order to find the similarity and understand its effectiveness.
Therefore, the study is carried out over seven to nine years and the patients of EPIC-Norfolk and UK Biobank are monitored. According to the result obtained from the research, it suggests, arteriolar and venular width, width variation and curviness are the critical predictors of death from circulatory disease in men. However, arteriolar and venular area, width, width fluctuation and vein curviness emerged as risk predictors in women.
